Tajomstvá korešpondencie pápežského internuncia

List pápežského internuncia "Albaniho" Edwardovi Colemanovi. (George Treby) Collection of Letters ... relating to the Horrid Popish Plot, London 1681, p. 25 a p. 121.

Hoci tu použitá šifra je mimoriadne jednoduchá, žiadny člen tajného výboru Dolnej snemovne (House of Commons) britského parlamentu, ktorý skúmal Colemanove spisy, ju prečítať nedokázal. Štatistika frekvencií použitých šifier ukazuje, že bola použitá abecedná tabuľka, v ktorej boli písmenám abecedy priradené skupiny dvojmiestnych čísel, bez číslic 3, 0 a 8, a číslica 2 bola použitá len na mieste jednotiek. Číslica 8 resp. ľubovoľná dvojmiestna číselná skupina, ktorá ju obsahovala, ako sa zdá bola používaná ako indikátor zmeny na ďalšiu tabuľku resp. kód zostavený z trojmiestnych číslic, ktorý sa používal pri menách osôb, miest a slov často sa vyskytujúcich v korešpondencii.
Význam pripisovaný trojmiestnym šifrovým skupinám v nasledovnom rozlúštení nutne vyplýva z kontextu; nachádza sa tu len jedno opakovanie trojmiestnej skupiny podľa ktorej sa prepis dá skontrolovať.

Tabuľka trojmiestnych šifrových skupín bola pravdepodobne abecedná; takže aj tie, ktoré sú použité v texte ako sa zdá boli v abecednom poradí:

Tieto substitúty sú jedinými, ktoré dávajú zmysel.
Celá pasáž znie preto nasledovne:

What you propose touching the money which is in the castle [tj. Castel S. Angelo, kde pápež mal údajne nechávať uložený poklad] cannot be put in execution by the Pope but with consent of all the cardinals, and then [au cas échéant] by means of a Bull; you may then consider if in the conditions where are at present the affairs of England it would be for the interest of the Duke [of York] to bring to light an affair of this nature. That which I can with truth assure you, and whereof the Duke may be persuaded is that, should he happen on day to become the master of England, they will employ at Rome both money and credit to assist him to restore the Catholic religion in England, seeing that Rome and the Emperor have a most particular zeal and affection for all that regard it.

Pápežský internuncio v Bruseli, Ottavio Falconieri, používal podpis Albany resp. Albani v listoch určených Edwardovi Colemanovi, aby tak utajil svoju totožnosť. Jeho nasledovník, Sebastiani Antonio Tanari, menovaný v septembri 1674, dorazil do Bruselu v júni 1675. Medzitým Claudius Agretti vystupoval ako charge-d'affaires.
